Classic American Scones



2 cups flour

1/3 cup sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup raisins

3 tbsp butter (cold) — 1/2 cup or 4 oz.)

1/2 cup sour cream (can use yogurt)

1 large egg

sugar for topping

 

Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda together. Use the largest holes on a box grater, grate the butter into the flour mixture. Will resemble coarse crumbs when ready. Add raisins. Whisk sour cream and egg together until combined. Stir into the flour mixture until you have large dough clumps. Pat dough into a 7- or 8-inch circle about 3/4 inch thick. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 15-17 minutes. 

 

Serve with clotted cream and jam or enjoy with cheese and a cup of tea.
